Asthma, eczema and allergies are a group of conditions that are associated with an immune system that is out of balance. As 70% of our immune system is in our gut, it is important to look after our gut health to correct this imbalance.

Prebiotics are types of indigestible dietary fibres that feed the friendly bacteria in our gut. This helps to create a balanced and diverse microbiome. The friendly bacteria also produce products which feed the cells that line our gut which keeps our gut lining healthy. A healthy gut lining and a balanced microbiome does wonders in regulating our immune system and improving our respiratory health, skin health and allergy symptoms.

This recipe is a gut loving healthy alternative to regular pancakes. Oats, bananas on the green side, flax and hemp seeds are all great sources of beneficial prebiotics.

Ingredients

1 ½ cups whole grain oats

2 bananas with a green tinge

1 tablespoon green banana flour

3 eggs

¼ cup flax or hemp seeds

½ cup unsweetened natural yoghurt (or dairy free milk if DF)

1 tablespoon melted coconut oil

1 tablespoon pure maple syrup

Pinch of sea salt

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Add whole grain oats to a high-speed blender or food processor and blend for 5 seconds.
  2. Add all remaining ingredients and blend for 30 seconds.
  3. Before cooking, let the mixture rest for 10 minutes.
  4. Gently heat a non-stick frying pan with a little butter. Once hot, drop tablespoonfuls of the mixture onto the surface. *You can make these whatever size you want!
  5. When bubbles have formed on the top of the pancakes, turn them over and cook the second side until golden.
  6. Serve warm for breakfast.

These pancakes also make a great healthy addition to lunchboxes!

To make these extra delicious, add in some broken up pieces of quality dark chocolate while they are cooking in the pan.
